Roanoke Ends Ice Bears’ Season with 3-1 win in Knoxville.

The Ice Bears’ magical season came to an abrupt end on Easter Sunday in Knoxville with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs.  Roanoke got two goals in quick succession early in the first period, which proved enough for the win.  They added an insurance goal on a breakaway in the second period.  Stepan Timofeyov had Knoxville’s lone goal. 

Jimmy Poreda yielded two goals on four shots.  Kristian Stead came on in relief and stopped 16 of 17 the rest of the way.  Game Summary.

Knoxville Outplayed in Roanoke; Rail Yard Dawgs Force Game 3 with 5-1 Win.

April 16, 2022

The Ice Bears were thoroughly outplayed by the Rail Yard Dawgs in Roanoke as they dropped the second game of the first round playoff series.  Jared Nash managed Knoxville’s only goal with less than five minutes left in the game.  Jimmy Poreda saved 21 of 25 Roanoke shots before giving way to Kristian Stead.  Stead had 10 saves in 11 shots.  Game Summary.

Knoxville’s Jeff Carr Announced as SPHL Coach of the Year.

Knoxville Dominates in Playoff Opener 4-1 Over Roanoke.

April 13, 2022

A shorthanded Ice Bears team dominated the Railyard Dawgs in their playoff opener with a 4-1 win in Knoxville.  Knoxville was three men down due to injuries and a suspension.  Coach Carr’s call out of Roanoke did not result in an overly rough game.  Stepan Timofeyev staked Knoxville to the early lead and added an empty netter to seal the win.  Andrew Bellant made it 2-0 in the second on a back door feed from Dean Balsamo.  Balsamo added a goal of his own in the third, assisted by Jimmy Poreda.  Poreda stopped 30 of 31 Dawgs shots for the win in goal.  The Ice Bears go for the series sweep in Roanoke on Saturday.  Game Summary.

Ice Bears Win Overtime Thriller Over Evansville in Knoxville; Claim SPHL Record for Regular Season Wins.

Brady Fleurent scored a power play goal with 2 minutes left to send Saturday’s game into overtime.  Stepan Timofeyev rammed home a Dean Balsamo pass to give the Ice Bears the 2-1 overtime win against Evansville in the regular season finale for both teams.  Win number 42 on the regular season is the new SPHL record.  Kristian Stead stopped 17/18 Thunderbolt shots for his 18th win of the season.  Knoxville will now have home ice advantage throughout the President’s Cup playoffs.  Game Summary.

Ice Bears Beat Thunderbolts 5-3 in Evansville; Claim Coffey Cup Trophy.

April 8, 2022

Knoxville scored four unanswered goals in the third period to defeat the Thunderbolts 5-3 in Evansville on Friday.  In so doing, they set an SPHL record for wins in a regular season, won the regular season championship for the first time in 13 years, and claimed the William B. Coffey Trophy.  Andrew Bellant had two goals, including an empty netter to seal it.  Brady Fleurent, Chris Jones (his first as an Ice Bear) and Dean Balsamo (game winner) also scored.  Jimmy Poreda was stellar in goal, stopping numerous point blank tries by Evansville.  He finished with 36 saves in the win.  Game Summary.

Ice Bears Come back to Maul Dawgs in Roanoke.

Seven different Ice Bears scored as Knoxville mauled the Rail Yard Dawgs 7-4 in a bloody contest in Roanoke.  Jared Nash, Andrew Bellant, Steven Leonard, Jason Price, Tanner Salsberry (his first as an Ice Bear), Anthony McVeigh, and Stepan Timofeyev all had goals.  Jimmy Poreda had 26 saves for the win.  Knoxville’s Carter Cowlthorp and Roanoke’s Brant Sherwood both left the ice after bloody altercations.  Knoxville left town still in first place, needing only 1 more point to claim the regular season championship.  Game Summary.

April Fools in Roanoke.

April 1, 2022

It was April Fools’ Day for the Ice Bears in Roanoke as they fell 2-3 to the Rail Yard Dawgs.  Knoxville appeared to tie the game with 2.9 seconds left only to see it waived off for a “dislodged net” that wasn’t.   Andrew Bellant scored the first and what appeared to be last goals for the Ice Bears.  Sandwiched in between was a third period goal by Anthony McVeigh.  Kristian Stead stopped 37 shots in the hard luck loss.  Game Summary.

Knoxville Gains Sole Possession of First with Win in Birmingham.

March 26, 2022

Huntsville lost its second in a row while the Ice Bears outlasted the Bulls 6-4 in Birmingham.   The win gave Knoxville sole possession of first place in the SPHL season standings.  Stepan Timofeyev had two more goals for Knoxville.  He now has 11 goals in his last 8 games.  Brady Fleurent had the game winning goal.  Anthony McVeigh, Dean Balsamo, and Jared Nash also scored for the Bears.  Jimmy Poreda got the win in goal with 31 saves.  Game Summary.

Booster Club Jersey Auction Held on March 25.

The Knoxville Ice Bears Booster Club held a live auction of the Booster Club Warm Up Jerseys on Friday March 25.  The auction was held on ice immediately after the game against Birmingham on Friday.  A few photos of the jerseys and the auction are avaialbe at the link below. Ice Bears Regain Share of SPHL Lead with 4-3 Win Over Birmingham.

Stepan Timofeyev had two more goals to lead Knoxville 4-3 over Birmingham in Knoxville.  Kyler Matthews and Razmuz Waxin-Engback also scored for the Ice Bears.  Kristian Stead had 14 of 17 saves.  The win by Knoxville coupled with Huntsville’s loss put them tied atop the SPHL season standings.  Game Summary.

Knoxville Claims Franchise Record 37th Win, 6-2 Over Macon.

March 20, 2022

The Ice Bears won their 37th game of the regular season with a 6-2 victory over Macon in Knoxville.  The win set a new franchise record for wins in the regular season.  Brady Fleurent set the pace with two goals.  Nick Leitner, Stepan Timofeyev, Andrew Bellant, and Kyler Mathews also had goals, while Razmuz Waxin-Engback had three assists.  Jimmy Poreda saved 16 of 18 Macon shots for the win.  Game Summary.

Ice Bears Hang on for Their First Win Over the Rivermen, 4-2 in Knoxville.

March 17, 2022

Stepan Timofeyev scored another circus goal to get things started against Peoria Thursday Night in Knoxville.  Anthony McVeigh and Razmuz Waxin-Engback extended the lead to 3-1 before Peoria got one back on a bad hop off the boards with a little over 3 minutes left.  JB Baker slammed the door, however, with another empty net goal for the final tally.  Jimmy Poreda stopped 29 of 31 shots in his first game back from the ECHL.  Game Summary.

Ice Bears Slam the Door on Quad City with Four Third Period Goals.

Knoxville scored four unanswered goals in the third period to pull away from Quad City 6-1 in Knoxville.  Andrew Bellant and Stepan Timofeyev got things started with a goal apiece in the first period.  After Quad City scored in the second, Brady Fleurent, Razmuz Waxin-Engback, and Sam Turner blew it open in the third.  Kristian Stead had 32/33 saves for his 16th win of the year.  Game Summary.

Ice Bears Break it Open Late for 4-2 Win at Home Over Quad City.

Brady Fleurent scored from a sharp angle with just over 5 minutes left in the third period to give Knoxville a 2-1 lead.  Razmuz Waxin-Engback had scored in the second when he swatted a rebound past the Quad City net minder to tie it at 1.  Andrew Bellant added two empty net goals sandwiched around a late Quad City score with its goalie pulled.  Kristian Stead marked his return from the ECHL with 28/30 saves.  Game Summary.

Ice Bears Bounce Back in Birmingahm with Solid 4-1 Win.

March 5, 2022

Knoxville rebounded from a tough home loss with a solid 4-1 win in Birmingham.  Dino Balsamo had two goals to go with one each by Brady Fleurent and Stepan Timofeyev.  Tristan Côté-Cazenave stopped 25 of 26 Birmingham shots for his first win as an Ice Bear.  Kyler Mathews won a fight at the opening puck drop.  Balsamo just missed a Gordy Howe hat trick with another fight in the first period.  Game Summary.

Ice Bears Outshoot Huntsville but Lose 4-6 at Home in Battle for SPHL Lead.

March 4, 2022

Huntsville took a quick two-goal lead and made it stand up en route to a 6-4 win over the Ice Bears in Knoxville.   Razmuz Waxin-Engback, Stepan Timofeyev, and Jason Price kept it within reach until Dino Balsamo tied it at 4 in the second period.  The Havoc added two goals in the third to ice the win.  Evan Moyse stopped 4 of 8 shots before giving way to newcomer Tristan Côté-Cazenave, who had 12 saves in 14 attempts.  Game Summary.

Stepan Timofeyev scored two goals, including a “Michigan,” and won a fight to pace the Ice Bears to a 6-1 win over Roanoke in Knoxville.  Andrew Bellant, JB Baker, Anthony McVeigh, and Razmuz Waxin-Engback also had goals in the win over a thoroughly demoralized pack of Railyard Dawgs. Stefan Brucato scored on a two man advantage with 42 seconds left to give Knoxville the 5-4 win.  Roanoke had scored a couple of sloppy goals back-to-back to tie it in the third.  Jared Nash, Razmuz Waxin-Engback, Dean Balsamo, and JB Baker also had goals for Knoxville.  Sammy Bernard had 9 of 11 saves before Evan Moyse came on in relief.  Moyse stopped 14 of 16 shots for the win.  Kyler Matthews and Kasey Kulczycki both won fights decisively.  Game Summary.

Marksmen Claim 2-1 Overtime Win in Knoxville.

Fayetteville scored a power play goal 25 seconds into overtime to defeat the Ice Bears 2-1 in Knoxville.  Anthony McVeigh had tied it with 5:05 left to get Knoxville the overtime point.  Evan Moyse had 18 saves in defeat.  Knoxville remained in first place but Peoria is hot on their heels. Knoxville Beats Fayetteville—Climbs Back Atop the Standings.

The Ice Bears reclaimed the top of the SPHL regular season standings with a solid 4-2 win over Fayetteville in Knoxville. Knoxville’s win snapped a 9-game winning streak by the Marksmen.  Kyler Matthews, Dean Balsamo, Brady Fleurent, and Jason Price scored for the Bears. Knoxville Mauls Mayhem in Macon, Regains First in Standings.

The Ice Bears found themselves back atop the SPHL standings after a 6-1 mauling of the Mayhem in Macon. JB Baker paced the Bears with two goals. Jason Price, Anthony McVeigh, Dean Balsamo, and Razmuz Waxin-Engback also scored for Knoxville.  McVeigh’s came on a penalty shot.  Kristian Stead saved 24 of 25 Macon shots. Game Summary.

Kristian Stead had another great night in goal for Knoxville, stopping 36 of 37 Pensacola shots.  Dean Balsamo and Jared Nash scored a goal apiece in quick succession in the first period to give the Ice Bears all they would need for the win.

Knoxville snapped its four game losing streak with a solid 4-1 win in Pensacola.  Jason Price, Dean Balsamo, Stefan Brucato, and Jared Nash had goals for the Ice Bears.  Kristian Stead had a stellar night in goal with 33 saves out of 34 Ice Flyers shots.

Razmuz Waxin-Engback staked Knoxville to an early lead.  Andrew Bellant made it 2-1 in the third, but Marcel Godbout added two late goals to give Peoria the 3-2 win.  Evan Moyse had 27 of 30 saves for Knoxville. Game Summary.

Knoxville dropped its third game in a row Saturday in Roanoke.  In so doing they gave up their “game in hand” advantage in the standings to Huntsville.     Roanoke tallied three goals in the third period en route to the 5-1 win. Jared Nash had Knoxville’s lone score.  Kristian Stead, back from his loan to ECHL South Carolina, saved 32/37 shots in the loss.  Game Summary.

Knoxville Loses Hold on First Place; Suffers Second Home Loss to the Havoc 3-5.

The Ice Bears lost the battle for first place Friday in Knoxville with a 3-5 defeat at the hands of Huntsville.  It was their second home loss of the season, both to Huntsville.  Jason Price had two goals to give Knoxville the early lead.  Brady Fleurent tied it in the third period on a power play.  A late power play goal by the Havoc sealed the deal.  Evan Moyse stopped 13 of 17 Huntsville shots.  Game Summary.

Ice Bears Disappoint in 4-7 Road Loss in Birmingham.

Knoxville lost for the second time in three games as Birmingham scored five goals in the second period to cruise to a 7-4 win.  Stepan Timofeyev had two goals and two assists to pace the Ice Bears.  Joey Strada and Riley Robertson had a goal apiece.  Sammy Bernard and Evan Moyse combined for 29 saves on 36 shots.  Game Summary.

Ice Bears Reclaim First with 4-2 Win over Quad City.

Knoxville avenged Saturdays’ loss over Quad City, winning 4-2 Sunday afternoon.  The win put them back in first place with two games in hand over the idle Huntsville Havoc.  The chippy play by the Storm finally caught up with them, as four different Ice Bears had power play goals.  Sammy Bernard had 35 saves in 37 shots for Knoxville. Knoxville took its first regulation loss since December 11 as a chippy Quad City squad cruised to a 5-2 win.   Dean Balsamo had the only two goals for the Ice Bears, who missed on many scoring opportunities.  Evan Moyse saved 34 of 38 Quad City shots in the defeat.  Game Summary.

Ice Bears Win in Danville 4-0; Claim First in SPHL Standings.

Knoxville beat Vermilion County 4-0 Friday in Danville.  With Huntsville’s loss, Knoxville climbed atop the SPHL standings.  Jason Price and Anthony McVeigh staked the Ice Bears to a 2-0 lead before Brady Fleurent added an EN goal.  Ned Simpson followed with his first career goal 14 seconds later.  Sammy Bernard stopped 25 shots in the shutout win.     Game Summary.

Knoxville continued its dominance over Vermilion County with a 5-1 win Saturday at home.  Dean Balsamo, Joey Strada,

Anthony McVeigh, Sam Turner, and

Jared Nash had goals for Knoxville.  Evan Moyse was 1:35 short of a shutout, stopping 29 Vermilion shots.  Game Summary.

In his first game back in Knoxville this season, Brady Fleurent scored two goals, including the game winner, to lead Knoxville’s comeback win over Fayetteville.  Stepan Timofeyev came off IR to add two goals as well. JB Baker added an EN goal to round out the scoring for Knoxville.  Evan Moyse had 26 saves in the win.  Game Summary.

JB Baker scored this game-tying goal in the second period Sunday against Evansville.  Jared Nash netted the game-winner in the third, followed by Kasey Kulczycki’s insurance goal 51 seconds later.  Evan Moyse stopped 17 of 18 Thunderbolts shots for the win in net.  Game Summary

Ice Bears Suffer First Overtime Loss in Macon, 4-3.

Knoxville lost its first overtime game of the season 4-3 in Macon.  They gave up a two-goal lead as the second period expired, and a one-goal lead in the third period to forge the overtime.  Razmuz Waxin-Engback had two goals to pace the Bears, to go with one by JB Baker.  Evan Moyse took his first loss as an Ice Bear, stopping 30 of 34 Macon shots.  Game Summary

Stead Stuns Havoc with Shootout Shut Down.

January 11, 2022

Kristian Stead shut down Huntsville's shootout efforts to lead the Ice Bears to a 2-1 victory over the Havoc.  It was Knoxville's second straight win in Hunstville.  Stead stopped 30/31 shots in regulation and overtime to go with the 5 in the shootout.  Jared Nash took a rink wide stretch pass from JB Baker for Knoxville's lone goal in regulation.  Stefan Brucato got Knoxville's only shootout goal for the game winner.  Game Summary

The Ice Bears went to work early Saturday night, scoring twice in the first 3 minutes to coast to a 4-1 win over Vermilion County. Anthony McVeigh had two goals to go with one each from Dean Balsamo and JB Baker.  Kristian Stead stopped 18 of 19 Vermilion shots, including the breakaway shown above.  Game Summary.   

Ice Bears Beat Pensacola on a Foggy Night in Knoxville.

The Ice Bears cut through the fog on the rink to beat Pensacola 3-0 at home on New Year's night. Jared Nash and Joey Strada netted their first goals as Ice Bears.  JB Baker scored his customary empty netter.  Evan Moyse got the shutout win with 21 saves.  Game Summary.

Knoxville Shoots Down Ice Flyers 4-3 in New Year's Eve Win.

December 31, 2021

Knoxville rang in the new year with its second straight home shootout, a 4-3 win over Pensacola.  JB Baker had two goals in regulation, along with Sam Turner.  Joey Strada, Anthony McVeigh, and Jason Price scored in the shootout.  Kristian Stead stopped 21/24 in regulation and OT, and 3/4 in the shootout for the win.  With Quad City's loss, Knoxville claimed sole possession of second in the standings.  Game Summary.

The Ice Bears handed Huntsville its first home loss of the season 4-2 Thursday.  Kyler Matthews and Stefan Brucato staked the Bears to a 2-1 lead until the Havoc tied it in the third.  Anthony McVeigh got the game winner at 8:58 of the third.  JB Baker added added another EN goal for the final margin.  Evan Moyse stopped 41 of 43 shots for the win in his debut for Knoxville.   Game Summary.   

Roster Shake Up--Ice Bears to Have a New Look Heading into the New Year.

After adding Jeff Eppright and Luke Erickson to the roster over Christmas, the Ice Bears will have a new look for the New Year.  Forwards Dean Balsamo, Andrew Bellant, and Steven Leonard have been called up to the ECHL.  No word yet on their replacements.  In addition, Coltan Fletcher has been traded to Birmingham for Kasey Kulczycki, and Connor Graham has been traded to Vermilion for Joey Strada

Dean Balsamo had two straight shootout goals and one in regualtion to pace Knoxville over Roanoke 3-2.  Colton Fletcher had the other goal in the shootout, while Andrew Bellant scored the other goal in regulation.  Kristian Stead had 26 saves in regulation and the overtime, and stopped 6 of 8 shootout attempts by Roanoke.  Game Summary.

The Booster Club set a record in ornament sales, while the Ice Bears came from two goals down to beat Macon 6-3.  Four second period goals in rapid succession by Alex Pommerville, Sam Turner, JB Baker, and Razmuz Waxin-Engback put Knoxville ahead for good.  Andrew Bellant added insurance in the third, follwed by an EN by Waxin-Engback.  Krsitian Stead had 20 saves in goal for the Ice Bears. There is a lot going on this weekend with Macon in town for a two game set Friday and Saturday.  Be sure to pick up a calendar at the Booster Club desk. And don't forget the ornament silent auction during Saturday's game!  The auction ends when the zamboni leaves the ice at the end of the second intermission.  Bid high and often to get a classy Christmas ornament autographed by your favorite player(s)!

Bears Take Second Straight Loss to Peoria 5-4.

December 11, 2021

For the second night in a row, the Ice Bears gave up a 4-3 lead in the third period.  This time the game winner for Peoria came with 4:01 left.  Goals by Jason Price, Anthony McVeigh, Stepan Timofeyev, and Dean Balsamo weren't enough.  Kristian Stead and newcomer Breandon Colgan combined for 26 saves on 31 Peoria Shots.  Game Summary.

The Ice Bears gave up a 4-3 lead in the third period, then lost the eventual shoot out 4-2 in Peoria Friday Night. Goals by Dean Balsamo, Steven Leonard, Andrew Bellant, and Colton Fletcher staked Knoxville to a 4-2 lead that they could not hold.  Kristian Stead took the loss, stopping 28/32 shots in regulation and the OT period.   Game Summary.   

Booster Club to Resume Holiday Ornament Silent Auction.

The Booster Club is bringing back a holiday tradition for the home game against Macon on December 18.  We will conduct a silent auction of holiday ornaments autographed by the Ice Bears players.  The ornaments will be available for viewing before and during the game in the East concourse.  Be sure to bid early and often to get your favorite ornament!  And while you're at it, ask about becoming a member of the Booster Club.

Ice Bears Shut Out Marksmen 3-0 in Fayetteville.

Kristian Stead  stopped all 29 shots from the Marksmen en route to the win.  Goals by Dean Balsamo, Stepan Timofeyev, and JB Baker paced the Bears. Next up is a two game set in Peoria next weekend.  Game Summary.

Razmuz Waxin-Engback had the third hat trick for the Ice Bears this season as they won another hard fought game in Birmingham. Andrew Bellant had two goals before being tossed on a game misconduct. Bears Beat Bulls in Brawl.

November 26, 2021

The Ice Bears went to a brawl Friday in Knoxville and a hockey game broke out.  Knoxville beat the boisterous Brimingham Bulls in a rough contest 2-0.  Anthony McVeigh had the game-winning goal in the third period.  JB Baker added an empty netter for the final margin.  Jimmy Poreda continued his success against the Bulls with 25 saves.  Game Summary.

The Ice Bears shutout the visiting Birmingham Bulls 5-0 on Teddy Bear Toss Night.  Captain Stefan Brucato set the pace with 2 goals.  JB Baker, Razmuz Waxin-Engback, and Andrew Bellant had a goal apiece.  Jimmy Poreda stopped 36 shots for his first shutout, including the masterpiece pictured above.  Game Summary.

Ice Bears Win Overtime Thriller 3-2 over Vermilion County.

In sharp contrast to Friday's game, Knoxville eked out an overime win over the Bobcats Saturday night in Danville.  Colton Fletcher's third period goal forced the extra stanza.  Stefan Brucato's backhander with 1:45 left sealed the deal. Andrew Bellant had the other Knoxville goal.  Jimmy Poreda stopped 32 shots in the victory.  The OT loss gave the Bobcats their first SPHL point.  Game Summary

Despite leading for most of the night and outplaying the Havoc, Knoxville lost a shootout 6-5 in Huntsville.  The Havoc tied it with under 5 minutes left.  After a scoreless overtime, Huntsville's Jacob Barber put two shootout goals past Knoxville's Jimmy Poreda.  Andrew Bellant scored Knoxville's only shootout goal.  Game Summary

The Huntsville Havoc snapped Knoxville’s 3 game win streak with a 2-0 win in Knoxville.  Jacob Barber scored at 14:31 of the first period to give the Havoc a lead they would never relinquish.  The Ice Bears had only 18 shots on goal.  Barber added another goal in the third to seal the deal. Alex Pommerville beat former Ice Bear Austyn Roudebush for the game winner to give the Ice Bears a second straight come from behind win in OT.  Stefan Brucato had tied it with two third period goals.  Jimmy Poreda held the Railyard Dawgs scoreless after giving up two goals in the first three minutes.  Game Summary.

Ice Bears Win Overtime Thriller in Birmingham.

Andrew McLean got the game tying goal with 6 sconds left to send it to overtime Friday in Birmingham.  Newcomer Andrew Bellant then scored with 2:16 left in the extra stanza to give Knoxville the 3-2 win.  Both goals came on the powerplay following a major penalty to Birmingham's David Nippard.  The Bears are off to a strong 2-0 start on the young  season.  Game Summary.

Ice Bears Celebrate 20th Birthday with 3-1 win over Macon.

Many new faces dotted the lineup as the Ice Bears celebrated their 20th Birthday.  Goals by Stefan Brucato, Michael Mercurio, and Carter Cowlthorp paced the Bears to a 3-1 win over Macon. Jimmy Poreda stopped 22 of 23 Macon shots.  Game Summary
