August 24, 2008 – As the Knoxville Ice Bears prepare to defend their SPHL title, the organization will also strive to make the home games more family-friendly. Several pre-season events will set the stage for this, including a Youth Dance Clinic, Mascot try-outs and National Anthem try-outs.

Girls in the Knoxville area will have the opportunity to attend the Hunnies Youth Dance Clinic on Saturday, September 6. The Hunnies are a dance and promotional team that entertain fans during games and perform community service throughout the season. They will teach dance skills and techniques at this new event. Participants of the clinic will be able to perform with the Hunnies at center ice on Sunday, November 23 when the Ice Bears take on the Richmond Renegades during Family Fun Day.

The clinic is open to girls ages 5-15, and it will take place at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum (KCC) Ballroom from 10-3 that Saturday. Pre-registration is required. “The Hunnies look forward to working with local girls during the clinic. In fact, we hope to make this an annual event. We interact with a lot of kids during our games, and we feel that this will be a great way to extend that interaction.

One of the most rewarding things about being part of this team is the joy that comes with being a role model to so many kids in the Knoxville area,” commented Erica Wilkerson, captain of the Hunnies.

Ever wonder how to become a mascot? Join us and experience an unforgettable opportunity. The Knoxville ice Bears will also be holding mascot try-outs. Chilly and Nippy are an integral part of our team and can be seen at numerous events in Knoxville throughout the year as well as at every home game. Try-outs will be held at the KCC Ballroom on Tuesday, September 23 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. An interview and performance will make up the try-out process. The try-outs are open to all interested participants.

The third and final pre-season event will be National Anthem try-outs. The Ice Bears schedule singers to perform the National Anthem at the beginning of every home game. This year try-outs will be held at Knoxville Center Mall on Thursday, September 25 from 6-8 p.m. These try-outs are also open to all interested participants, and the public is invited to the event. Judges will include Jamie Lewis of Praise 96.3 and other local media personalities. “

The Knoxville Ice Bears organization works diligently to not only produce a great product on the ice, but to also entertain fans while they watch our team. This year you will see more family-friendly promotions and activities. We want people of all ages to be able to attend our games and have a great experience,” said president and general manager Mike Murray.
